In addition to core learning in Literacy and Mathematics, students at Northcote Primary School engage in dedicated lessons in Science, Humanities, and Technology. These subjects are taught through stand-alone sessions, while teachers also thoughtfully connect them to concepts being explored in Literacy and Mathematics to enrich and deepen student understanding.
SCIENCE
Students explore the wonders of biology, chemistry, physical, and earth and space sciences. Along the way, they build a strong understanding of important scientific ideas and how science works. They also learn how to ask questions, investigate, and think like scientists, while discovering how science influences our world, from daily life to big-picture issues in society and culture.
HUMANITIES
Students learn about history, geography, civics and citizenship, and—starting in Years 5 and 6—economics. They explore how these areas have shaped the world we live in and continue to impact our daily lives. Through their learning, students discover how people connect with each other, with communities and institutions, and with the natural and built environments around them.
TECHNOLOGY
Students explore both digital technologies and design & technologies, where they get hands-on with creating and testing real-world solutions to current and future challenges. Using a variety of tools and systems, they learn how to design, build, and improve their ideas. Along the way, they also start to think critically about how technology affects our lives, including its social, ethical, and environmental impacts.
Over a two-year learning cycle, students will explore a wide range of engaging and age-appropriate learning experiences. Many of these units finish with a special event—such as an excursion, incursion, or learning expo—where students proudly share what they've learned with their families. These moments are a wonderful way for you to be part of your child’s educational journey.
