At Northcote Primary School, mathematics is a positive, engaging and hands-on experience in which our students develop a deep understanding of the important mathematical concepts and skills.
We use The Big Ideas in Number which supports development of understanding in number from early to advanced concepts. These ideas, such as Place Value, Multiplicative Thinking, and Partitioning, help students make meaningful connections across different areas of maths and build on their understanding of skills and concepts from year to year. Our teachers work collaboratively to assess and analyse student data to ensure our students are challenged and supported at their point of need.
Consistent with the Department of Education’s Teaching and Learning Model, our maths program incorporates explicit learning experiences that assist students to develop skills across all 6 strands in maths: Number, Algebra, Measurement, Geometry, Statistics and Probability.
Students are given the opportunity to work collaboratively and talk about what they are learning using hands-on materials, challenging problems, open-ended investigations, number talks, purposeful games and puzzles and technology.
We provide enrichment opportunities through the Maths Olympiad challenge, where students are encouraged to develop increased creativity and flexibility in problem solving and mathematical reasoning.
