Information Technology

At Northcote Primary School, technology plays a central role in empowering students to become successful, engaged global citizens. We are committed to providing innovative technologies that equip students with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-changing world, while maintaining a student-centred learning environment that encourages interaction, collaboration, and inclusion.

Technology Use in the Classroom

Prep to Year 2 students have access to iPads in the classroom, while Year 3-6 students participate in our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program. All classrooms are equipped with interactive screens, ensuring that technology is embedded in daily learning. Students engage with a range of digital tools that are tailored to their developmental needs, enhancing engagement, creativity, and learning outcomes. From foundational digital literacy in the early years to more complex research, collaboration, and problem-solving tasks in the upper years, technology supports and enriches student learning at every stage.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

The BYOD program for Years 3-6 is designed to empower students with personal devices to enhance their learning experience. In partnership with Learning with Technologies, an industry leader in BYOD programs, we ensure students have access to reliable, high-quality digital tools that support creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. This program aims to equip 21st-century learners with the tools they need to succeed in an increasingly digital world. Using personal devices individually fosters digital literacy, independence, and essential learning habits, preparing students for future learning and success.

Safe and Responsible Technology Use

Our P-6 digital literacy program guides students in developing strategies for navigating the online world safely and responsibly, including online safety, responsible device use, and respectful interactions. We prioritise this as a key skill for 21st-century students, with a sequential learning path that develops digital literacy across all year levels.

At Northcote Primary School, responsible technology use is a natural extension of everything we do, integrated into our practices and values. Online safety lessons are embedded in our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and aligned with our Behaviour Expectations. These lessons and conversations focus on our core values—respect, collaboration, and community-mindedness—and are part of ongoing classroom discussions, ensuring responsible technology use is reinforced alongside other positive behaviour expectations.

iPads and laptops are used purposefully to enhance learning, for example practising phonics or to reinforce a numeracy skill under teacher supervision. Technology is not typically used for recreational activities during class time, however may be offered as a reward for positive behaviour.
